WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Lesson Objectives: Students will create their own “wild things” incorporating pattern based on Maurice Sendak’s classic book.

Time Required: 1 to 1 1/2 hours

Artist: Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are

Source: http://deepspacesparkle.blogspot.com/2009/03/where-wild-things-are-watercolor.html

Materials:

            Watercolor paper 9×12

            Pencils

            Crayons

            Watercolor paints: all colors

            Paintbrushes

            Cups for water

            Paper towels

Presentation:

  1. Read Where The Wild Things Are. Show students the different characteristics that the wild things have: horns, claws, teeth, etc. Show patterns in the illustrations.

Procedure:

  1. Pass out white paper and pencils. Make sure paper is placed vertically.
  2. Write names on back.
  3. Show students how to draw their own wild things. Using pencil, start with the head…what shape? Horns? How many? What kind of hair…short and spiky or long and wavy? Ears? Eyes? Mouth? What is their wild thing’s expression? Teeth?
  4. Move on to the body, arms, and legs. Claws? Tails?
  5. Trace over all lines with black crayon.
  6. Add details to each body part with different colored crayons. The crayons are to add detail…not color the whole wild thing in!! Here’s where you can add stripes, polka dots, scales, etc.
  7. Using minimal water to control where it flows, color in the wild thing completely with watercolors over the crayon. The crayons will “resist” the paint and shine right through.
  8. Allow paper to dry, mount and return to students.
