LESSON PRESENTATION INSTRUCTIONS

COLOR

TROPICAL FISH 

Lesson Objectives: Students will learn about color and chalk pastel techniques.

Time Required:      1 hour

Artist: Paul Klee, Golden Fish, 1925 (available online)







Materials:

Plain fabric, white or beige

Chalk pastels

Milk or buttermilk

Iron

Scrap paper.

Butcher paper to cover desks

Examples of tropical fish 

Presentation:

Discuss color and how colorful Hawaiian fish are.

Procedure:

  1. Pass out scrap paper and examples of tropical fish and have students draw their own fish.
  2. Pass out fabric wet with buttermilk and set it on butcher paper.
  3. Draw their fish on the fabric with chalk pastel and color in.
  4. Let dry.
  5. Parents: Place fabric between 2 pieces of scrap paper and iron. The heat from the iron heats the protein in the milk, setting the chalk so it doesn’t dust off.
