Materials:

Sheet of paper copied from a book. **I used a page on Perseverance from the Book of Virtues.  (See copy in binder.) Another idea would be a page of information about Paul Klee.  Copy the page onto a thick piece of paper like construction paper or heavy duty copy paper like you would put a resume on.  Regular copy paper is too thin.

Watercolors, warm and cool colors

Watercolor brushes

Water cups

Black Sharpies

Ruler

Paper towels

Presentation:    Introduce information about the artist and then teach color theory emphasizing warm/cool colors and the concept of Value/Saturation/Hue.  Tell the kids how to create different values of colors using watercolors, i.e. more water for lighter color, etc.

Procedure:

            1.  Using the ruler and Sharpie, have the kids draw a rectangle around the outside of the writing on the page of paper.  Then have them draw lines and shapes of various sizes inside the rectangle.  They can use the lines of text to create straight lines and shapes.  Have them draw columns and then divide them up into shapes rather than just drawing random triangles and squares in the middle of the page.

            2. When they are done with their grid, have them choose warm or cool colors to paint with.

            3.  Fill in the shapes with different colors and different values of the various colors.
