PATTERN, SYMMETRY and BALANCE
MAGNIFICENT MUMMIES
Lesson Objectives: To teach the students about symmetry and balance in art.
Time Required: 1 hour
Materials:
- Black paper 12×18
- Colored paper 12×18
- Oil Pastels
- White Chalk
- Metallic Colored Pencils
- Scissors
- Glue
Presentation: Discuss how symmetry is used in art. Give examples of what is symmetric versus asymmetric. Talk about balance in an artwork. Discuss pattern.
Procedure:
- Take the large black paper and fold in half lengthwise.
- Using the white chalk, drawn an outline of half of the coffin with the fold of the paper in the middle. Draw face and designs on the half with chalk.
- Unfold the paper and refold so the chalk drawing is on the inside. Rub hard to transfer the white chalk to the other side of the paper.
- Unfold and draw over the white lines where they are too light. You now have a symmetrical coffin.
- Use oil pastels to color in the designs and face. Metallic colored pencils may be used to color or color over the white chalk outline. Metallic sharpies do not color on top of chalk or oil pastel, so they do not work.
- Cut out the mummy and glue to the colored sheet of paper for a background.
