PATTERN
CAMOUFLAGE HANDS
Lesson Objectives: Students will learn about pattern while creating a close-up painting of animal skin or fur. They will then paint their own hand, camouflaging it in their painting.
Time Required: 2 sessions

Materials (Day 1):
9×12 tag board
Acrylic paints
Paintbrushes
Examples of patterned animal skin and fur
Materials (Day 2):
Hand lotion
Acrylic paints
Paintbrushes
Camera
Presentation: Discuss pattern and camouflage. Show some of Lui Bolin’s work, where he paints himself into the painting. Also show examples of animal patterns.
Procedure, Session 1:
Have students select which animal pattern they’d like to paint. With acrylic paints, create a close-up painting of their pattern.
Procedure, Session 2:
- Pass out patterns they painted in Session 1. Put on hand lotion.
- Place hand on top of painting.
- Without moving hand, paint it the same colors and patterns so it blends in with the original.
- Photograph hand on painting.
