Time Required: 1 Hour
Artist: John James Audubon, Carolina Parakeet & Tree Swallows
Source: Usborne Big Book of Things to Draw, pgs 72-73.
Website: http://www.artsology.com/motion_in_art.php Discusses motion in art.
Materials:
Watercolor paper
Pencil and Erasers
Watercolors (black, blue, orange)
Watercolor brushes (one thick and one thin for detail)
Paper towels
Presentation:
Discuss the artist and show the students how artists use different techniques to show motion in their art.
Procedure:
1. In pencil, following the directions in the book (see Binder), have the students draw three or four birds in different stages of flight and different sizes. Walk them through step-by-step using the shapes shown in the diagrams. It may be helpful to have a copy of the diagrams on each table group for the students to refer to. Use erasers to remove any unwanted lines in the bodies of the birds.
2. Using the larger watercolor brush, color the surrounding sky blue using plenty of water to get a washed out sky (not too dark).
3. Using the black at detail to the sea birds wings and tails. Use varying amounts of water to create different values of grey in the feathers.
4. Use the orange to color the beaks and legs.
Have paper towels on hand to blot up excess water and paint on the paper.
