INKY BEETLES

Lesson Objectives: Students will learn about color while creating a mixed media beetle.

Time Required:  1 session

Artist: Wassily Kandinsky, Blue Mountain

Materials:

White construction paper

Ink

Paintbrushes

Chalk pastels

Metallic pens (optional)

Wet Ones

Note: Before class, decide how many inky beetles you’d like the kids to do and cut the paper accordingly.

Presentation:   Discuss complementary color. Show different kinds of beetles.

Procedure:

  1. Pass out paper. Write names on back.
  2. With the ink, paint a large frame.
  3. Draw an oval in the middle of the frame with chalk pastel.
  4. Fill in around the oval with a different color of chalk pastel. Use a finger to smudge the chalk.
  5. With a thin paintbrush, use ink to draw a simple outline of a beetle.
  6. Add eyes and antennae to the head. Draw toes at the end of the legs.Add patterns on the wings.
  7. While the ink is still wet, smudge it a bit along the legs and body with a finger.
  8. Flick a paintbrush with ink to add a little splatter.
  9. Fill in parts on the beetle with a gold metallic pen.
  10. With chalk pastel, add detail to the beetles and the frame.
