I AIN’T GONNA PAINT NO MORE

Lesson Objectives: Students will mix their own colors to make the six colors of the color wheel, and then use their colors to paint a picture of their own arm and hand in the style of David Catrow’s illustrations in the book I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More, by Karen Beaumont.

Time Required: 1 hour

Artist: David Catrow, I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More

Materials:

White 9×12 paper

 Pencils

Black Sharpies

Red, blue, yellow tempera paint

Cups or paint palettes to mix paint in

Color Wheel template (1 per student)

Paintbrushes

Cups for water to rinse brushes

Presentation:

Read I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More. Show how David Catrow uses bold splashes of color

in his illustrations. Discuss how you can mix primary colors to create secondary colors.

Procedure:

  1. Pass out color wheels, red, yellow, and blue paints, and paintbrushes.
  2. Have students paint in red, blue, and yellow circles on the color wheel.
  3. Mix red and yellow in another cup to make orange: paint on color wheel.
  4. Mix red and blue in another cup to make purple: paint on color wheel.
  5. Mix yellow and blue in another cup to make green: paint on color wheel.
  6. Students now have 6 colors to paint with.
  7. Pass out white 9×12 paper. Have students write their name on the back.
  8. Have students lay arm on paper so their hand and part of arm shows. Trace around with pencil.
  9. Remove arm; trace over pencil lines with black Sharpie.
  10. Students can now paint their own arm and hand on the paper using their 6 colors. Encourage stripes, dots, and swirls of every color, making sure to lay colors down next to one another and not on top of each other to prevent all the colors from mixing together to brown.
  11. Students may also paint dots, swirls, etc. outside the arm for decoration.
