SILHOUETTES ON VALUE: OPTION 1

LESSON PRESENTATION INSTRUCTIONS

VALUE

SILHOUETTES ON VALUE

Lesson Objectives: Student will learn how to create different values of the same hue.

Time Required:  1 hour

Artist:  Arthur Dove,  Foghorn

Materials:

White construction paper 12×18

Tempera paint, including white

Paper plates for mixing paint

Black die cuts

Glue sticks

Presentation:

Define value and explain how we can create an infinite amount of values to any hue (color) by adding black (shading) or white (tinting). Show differences in value in Foghorn.

Demonstrate how to mix the paint to tint a color by creating a value scale.

Procedure:

1. Hand out white paper. Have them write their names on the back.

2. Have students choose the one color they will work with and give them a plate with their chosen color on one side and the same amount of white on the other.

3. Instruct them to use the color they chose at full value to paint a thick line along the bottom of their paper.

4. Mix a small amount of white into the color until all the swirls are gone, and paint another line above, but connected to the last so that no white is showing between the stripes.

5. Continue mixing and painting, trying to add the same amount of white each time, until the page is full.

6. Glue on 3-5 die cuts onto the page.

Options:

The possibilities for this project are endless! Orange paint with pumpkin die cuts, blue paint with fish die cuts, green paint with geckos, purple paint with butterflies, magenta paint with palm trees, etc.
