LESSON PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS

PATTERN

Lesson Objectives: To create a circular pattern that has radial symmetry.

Time Required: 1 session

Artist & Print: Chuck Thurston, Radial Symmetry #3 (Scroll down on website for Radial Symmetry # 1, 2, 3 & 4)

Materials:

Print or photocopy the grid (see binder) onto white paper

Markers

Silver Sharpies

Presentation:    Discuss pattern, color, concentric circles, and radial design.

Procedure:

1.     Draw a shape/pattern in the first segment of the innermost circle of the grid.

2.     Repeat the shape/pattern in the rest of the segments of the circle.

3.     Then draw a shape/pattern in the first segment of the next circle.

4.     Repeat the shape/pattern in the rest of the segments of the circle.

5.     Continue filling out the circles using the grid as a guide to ensure symmetry.

6.     Use silver sharpies to highlight details.
