Source: Dynamic Art Projects for Children, pgs 98-101

Materials:

  • White 9×12 Paper
  • Pencil
  • Markers

Presentation:    Discuss how pattern is used in art to show texture and draw the eye around the artwork.

Procedure:

1.  Using a pencil draw a face at the top of the paper.  Position your paper vertically.

2.  Draw a pillow shape around the face and then long wavy lines dividing the rest of the page into sections which will be the sections of the quilt.

3.  Go over the pencil lines with Black Marker.

4.  Using the black marker make a different pattern in each section of the quilt. For example, lines, dots, stars, swirls, triangles, and combinations of different shapes.

5.  Color with markers.

NOTE:  This project could also be done using black oil pastel for the outlines and patterns and watercolor to fill in the sections of the quilt.
