Presentation:

Discuss collage. Discuss Picasso and his blue period. Introduce the concept of cubism.

Procedure, Session 1:

  1. Pass out white construction paper. Names on back. Orient vertically.
  2. Have students rip different papers into pieces and glue them on the paper. They don’t need to fill the entire page, but there should be lots of overlapping pieces of paper.
  3. Let dry.

Procedure, Session 2:

  1. With a pencil, sketch out a shape of a guitar. Trace over with Sharpie. Add details on and around the guitar. Divide the guitar into several sections.
  2. With different colors of tempera paint, paint the sections in the guitar. Surrounding the guitar, paint blocks of colors (squares and rectangles).
  3. They don’t have to paint the entire piece of paper: leave some unpainted areas for the collage to show through.
  4. When dry, re-outline with black Sharpie if desired.
